SPOTLIGHT
Education Advocacy Program
Child Advocates' Education Advocacy Program trains volunteers to focus specifically on the educational progress of foster youth to ensure that they have the opportunity and resources needed to succeed academically. Education Advocates monitor their child's progress in school through regular contact with teachers, counselors, tutors and other adults involved in the child's education. They ensure that the child's rights guaranteed under state and federal education laws are fulfilled. As needed, they may also be appointed by the court to serve as the child's Education Rights Representative and to make key decisions to protect his/her educational future.
Education Advocates participate in eighteen hours of training focused on education issues and services. Education Advocates visit their child a minimum of once a month and stay in close contact with school personnel. The program's goal is to enhance children's academic achievement, a key predictor of stability in a child's successful foster placement as well as successful transition out of the foster care system.
